I don't know if this is a more generalized problem, but https://lookup.ld4l.org/authorities/search/linked_data/locnames_ld4l_cache?q=army&maxRecords=8&lang=en&context=true&response_header=true&startRecord=1 returns 9 results.

However, searching directly on id.loc.gov, I seem to get many more results.

In general, when searching against authorities I am getting many fewer results than expected.
