Abstract

This document proposes some changes to the SBOL governance document at 1, regarding the SBOL Editor term duration.

The key changes in this document would allow the option of extending the term of an SBOL Editor for an extra year.

Table of Contents

1. Rationale

Currently, SBOL Editors serve for two-year terms without the possibility of being re-elected for consecutive terms. However, this can lead to some problems for the following situations:

  1. Multiple SBOL Editors' terms ending roughly at the same time. If this happens, then (after elections) there would be a lot of new SBOL Editors in the group, and lot's of valuable information/know-how's/worflows would be lost since only a few experienced SBOL Editors would remain in the seat.
  2. There are no volunteers/nominees for an open seat as an SBOL Editor.

To tackle these problems, we suggest the following changes:

  1. Allow the re-election of an SBOL editor to extend the term of service for an extra year. The extension process pends upon unanimous approval of the editors and chair. This would allow to coordinate SBOL Editor rotations and prevent all unexperienced SBOL Editors from starting their terms simultaneously. Furthermore, this would permit more experienced SBOL Editors to extend their term and teach/pass on important information to newly accepted SBOL Editors. This would also allow the editors and chair to coordinate SBOL Editors' rotations to circumvent any problems and allow the SBOL community to have the ultimate saying in the matter.

The "SBOL Governance Changes" section will explain the changes to the text of the governance document at 1 that will occur if this SEP is accepted and adopted.

2. SBOL Governance Changes

If adopted, the following text:

Editors serve for a two year term and cannot serve terms consecutively.

will be replaced with:

Editors serve initially for a two-year term, and upon unanimous approval of the editors and chair, an editor's term can be extended for an additional third year. After completing their term as editor, a person may not run for editor again for at least one year.

in the governance document at 1.
