Development and branches

FYI:

For LNM and related tools: Branch master is for unstable and development while the branches prefixed with release are for beta and stable versions. So, this is exactly the opposite of what Git recommends. 🙃

I merged the branch release/2.6 (release/3.6 for atools) into master which is now used to continue development for 2.8.
Version numbers for development versions are odd. Therefore LNM in master is now 2.7.0.develop.

If an update for 2.6 is needed I'll have to cherry pick changes from master.
