gnome 3.16: Icon not showing with gnote (but ok with tomboy)

With both tomboy and gnote running, the extension correctly appears when tomboy is selected in the settings, but it does not seem to recognize that gnote is running when selectin 'gnote'.

Tested with gnome 3.16, ubuntu gnome 15.10 beta 1

I am seeing identical behaviour on Oracle Linux 7.2 running

gnote-3.8.1-3.el7.x86_64
gnome-shell-3.14.4-37.el7.x86_64

I built tomboy 1.14.4 from source (not packaged for Centos/OL) and switched to it in the extension preferences and the icon appeared in the panel. I have no particular preference except that gnote is packaged for my distro. If there's any debugging I can do, let me know.
