There is project which implements 1k DFU bootloader, but in different platform (SAMD).
https://github.com/majbthrd/SAMDx1-USB-DFU-Bootloader/blob/master/bootloader.c
With some effort I got it small as 800 bytes.

It shows that actual 4k may potentially be shrinked even more.
