@OceanWolf I just created my first version of the multifiguremanager (MEP23)

It has a couple of problems, but it works
Just if you have some time and want to do it, take a look at the example https://github.com/fariza/matplotlib/blob/multifigure-manager/examples/user_interfaces/multifiguremanager.py and give me some feedback on the functionality would be greatly appreciated.
The details of the implementation can be discussed later.

Hee, I saw that you had done this when I synced my fork to grab your tool-positions branch.

No time as of yet, after this weekend when I have all of my PRs made and in an acceptable state, then I'll take a look. I have just reminded myself of a small PR that I wanted to make, which should become a lot simpler after tomorrow's PR.
