If two fonts share a stem measurement (doesn't have to be both — just one), it can mess with the interpolation. This is common when the space might include widths, italics, or optical sizes.
MutatorScale isn't built to accommodate these things, and to a certain extent, they get in the way of the function of the tool. But our tool could do something to "de-dupe" those sources, looking into the font info or something, to at least make sure the two fonts could not be checked at the same time, or something
