In findSubtree() after step 6 and 7, need to implement some form of GC

Unlike in other cases, these sub-trees are allocated just to satisfy the request, and currently will get copied again, with the instance we return here having no reference to it. Need to implement some form of GC, or otherwise handle this more prudently.
