I notice there is a lot of clicking when the audio initially outputs, which causes the first 1-2 words to become incoherent. Is there a way to increase audio performance?

Definitely insufficient care was taken on ensuring the audio output gets a usable signal to noise ratio. Especially the LEDs yield a lot of noise and my suspicion is that this problem originate in Vcc ripple. Such noise arises in the analogue domain of the audio processing and is perhaps fixable by adding some capacitor across the power rails at the audio chip. But it could also be the ground wiring having noise in the path from the audio chip to the 3.5mm jack.
