There is some unfinished work to update the infrastructure to remove dependence on the core team. This is briefly mentioned in rust-lang/team#1027, but I am not clear exactly which steps are left. I think it would be helpful to identify exactly what is left to be done, and who could potentially work on that.

I've been looking for a place to drop a mention to this: the governance documentation still mentions the Core Team as the leadership of the Rust project (with a warning about that page ... uh ... possibly being not updated), so I guess at some point that page will be updated.

Thanks for the heads up! A rewrite of the forge is up at rust-lang/rust-forge#698 and tracked in a separate issue of #14 and rust-lang/rust-forge#694. This issue is specifically for the underlying infrastructure issues, such as hard-coded dependencies on the core team, permissions of the team database, and credentials and such things.
