As far as I can tell, there is no way to currently do this in hextri.
Do you have any ideas on how I could adapt hextri to do this?
My first thought was to plot a layer of hexagons ontop of a hextri plot where the borders could be manipulated, but I can't figure out how to reproduce the hexagonal patterning.
I think the hexagonal patterning comes from hexbin::hexbin, but I am not sure how to use the hexbin object to create a series of hexgon polygons.
Any pointers would be appreciated,

I came across this plotting package which will be useful for a paper I am writing.
An addition I want to make to this plot is to highlight particular hex's as is shown in the accepted answer in this question:
