Special characters not possible within NetCDF

I was trying to enter a special character within my NetCDF, but copy pasting the character led to a jumble of odd characters instead. I also tried typing the html code for the special character, but it appeared as the literal html code, not the special character. It seems for now it isn't possible to do special characters, and maybe is best practice to not use them in machine readable files anyway.
