A tartan is a
patterned cloth with crossing horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours, forming simple or complex rectangular patterns (Wikipedia).
This script allows you to generate pictures of such patterns using matplotlib, by specifying the sequences of colors in the vertical and horizontal bands.
