Use ShiftEdit to connect to your server via a php proxy script
Configure the username, password, server type and port in shiftedit-proxy.php and then upload to your webspace.
Then add a new site in ShiftEdit. Select "server type": ajax. The host should be the web path to the script e.g. yourdomain.com/shiftedit-proxy.php
You can enable SSL from Advanced -> Encryption
