habit README As habit is just a script much of this README is taken from the script itself. We hope you will find this script useful in a variety of contexts and let us know how you use it. # habit Script to mark actions This script records user defined actions. You can set the actions you wish to record in a file named ~/.habit.conf one per line. Data is recorded in ~/.habit.log. When you run the program and select, record or "mark" any action a new line is written to the log with the action name and current time. The exact information recorded is described below. Choosing an action can be done interactively or provided on the command line. This enables the habit script to be run as a command by other scripts. When you mark an action you can optionally run a script. Originally this feature was used to play music but anything that can be done at the command line can be executed. This is a potential security risk so please use this feature with care. Some of the fields are for compatibility or future use. action_name is just that. epoch_seconds is the time when you marked or recorded the action. hour_of_day is a simple calculation for charting. user_input is not currently used but is present to record any data you would like when marking an action. interval_hours gives the difference in time between the last marked action. readable_date is a human readable date and time string. location records gps coordinates on the activehabits.com Android app. All action times are recorded as unix epoch seconds, or the number of seconds since Jan 1, 1970, UTC. This allows relatievely simple arithmetic calculations regardless of time zone. We use programs named "dc" as a calculator and "date" to convert epoch seconds to something more familiar to us. Right now there is no UI for editing values but you may do so by editing the .habit.log file yourself. The following commands perform the key calculations used in the habit script. Simply, knowing that 60 seconds are in a minute, 60 minutes (3600 seconds) are in an hour and 24 hours (86400 seconds) are in a day many things can be calculated. In the habit script, $SECONDS is the output of `date +%s` - the present time in epoch seconds. In the example below 946684800 represents Dec 31, 1999 at 4 PM PST though you should the variables as needed for your own calculations # use this to give the seconds of any --date (replace string): # # date --date="Jun 28 19:38:15 PDT 2003" +%s # use this to convert epoch seconds back using local time zone (replace 946684800): # # date -d '1970-01-01 UTC 946684800 seconds' +"%Y-%m-%d T %T%z" Knowing how to convert to and from epoch seconds allows calculations between two arbitrary times. # use dc to give the difference between two second values (replace variables): # # dc -e " 2 k $SECONDS $LASTSECONDS - 3600 / n" To create our graphs, we chart time against time. Horizontal values are the date and time an action takes place with reasonable human readable lables. To create vertical values for our graphs we want to know the decimal hours difference between the beginning of the day today and right now, the hour of the day.
