Summary

  • add deepnote_toolkit.streamlit helpers for reading .deepnote sources and snapshots, rendering input blocks, and normalizing notebook outputs
  • add local-sidecar and public-runs API clients for dynamic Streamlit apps
  • authenticate hosted cloud runs as the current viewer by exchanging the opaque streamlit-token cookie for a short-lived, viewer-scoped public API bearer on every request
  • explicitly request detached cloud execution and normalize sanitized snapshotBlocks returned to hosted app viewers
  • keep explicit token, token_provider, and DEEPNOTE_TOKEN support for local development

This moves the Python helper package out of deepnote/deepnote#466, so it ships as part of Deepnote Toolkit rather than requiring a separate PyPI package and Toolkit dependency.

Hosted authentication

The hosted runner derives the app UUID from x-original-host (falling back to host) and calls POST /api/streamlit-apps/{appId}/api-token with the current session's opaque streamlit-token in the StreamlitToken header. The returned token is sent to the returned apiOrigin using the same Authorization: Bearer public API contract as CLI/API runs.

Credentials are resolved per request and are never cached globally or in Streamlit session state. A hosted request also never falls back to a process-wide DEEPNOTE_TOKEN.

Hosted run contract

DeepnoteCloudRunner submits POST /v2/runs with:

{
  "notebookId": "<notebook-id>",
  "detached": true,
  "inputs": {}
}

Detached execution keeps viewer-triggered work out of the shared project session and is required by the scoped app token. When polling completes, hosted viewers receive sanitized snapshotBlocks: the executed notebook's block IDs, types, metadata, and outputs, without raw project snapshotContent. Toolkit converts those blocks into the same RunResult.outputs model used by snapshots and the local sidecar.

Normal API-key clients remain compatible: inline snapshotContent is still parsed when the public API returns it.

Dependencies

  • Depends on deepnote/deepnote-internal#20682 for the short-lived Streamlit viewer API-token exchange, detached public-v2 run authorization, and sanitized snapshotBlocks response.
  • deepnote/deepnote#466 is updated to consume this Toolkit module and retain only the examples and cross-repository smoke tests.

Testing

  • 53 targeted tests passed (new Streamlit suite plus the existing streamlit_data_apps tests)
  • targeted Black, isort, Flake8, and MyPy checks passed
  • Toolkit-backed example smoke tests in deepnote/deepnote: 3 passed
  • local cross-repository HTTP smoke passed: the Python Toolkit client called the TypeScript sidecar, which launched the real local Deepnote kernel and returned the executed code output (kernel received count=9)
  • full unit collection was attempted locally but could not start because the available environment lacks the repository dev dependencies polars, pyspark, responses, and parameterized

The repository-wide Black/Flake8 checks still report pre-existing formatting differences and F824 warnings in unrelated files; all files changed by this follow-up pass their targeted checks.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added tools for building Streamlit apps from Deepnote notebooks.
    • Added support for local and hosted notebook execution with per-viewer authentication.
    • Added automatic rendering for common input types, including text, selections, sliders, dates, and checkboxes.
    • Added structured handling for notebook text, images, dataframes, agent output, and snapshots.
    • Exposed public authentication, runner, document, and widget utilities.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance for building, authenticating, deploying, and synchronizing Deepnote-powered Streamlit apps.

Review Change Stack

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Added the deepnote_toolkit.streamlit package. It provides typed Deepnote document and run-result parsing, native Streamlit input widgets, local and Cloud runner clients, and hosted per-viewer authentication. Cloud runs support input validation, polling, terminal errors, and snapshots. Documentation and unit tests cover authentication, runners, documents, outputs, widgets, and deployment configuration.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ff164

The change adds hosted Streamlit execution and input rendering, but current behavior can lose select/slider configuration, mishandle some widget defaults, and construct incorrect authentication URLs for malformed origins. These bounded correctness and authentication-integration issues should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

15-17: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Depend on a public token helper.

deepnote_toolkit.streamlit.auth imports the private _read_streamlit_token_from_context symbol directly. Renaming or removing it causes an import-time failure. Expose a public helper and import that name here.

@coderabbitai Addressed the top-level maintainability nit in 667cefe by exposing read_streamlit_token_from_context() publicly and using it from the new auth module while retaining the private compatibility wrapper. Targeted tests, Black, isort, Flake8, and MyPy pass. Please re-review the PR.

Preserve falsey text defaults.

str(input_block.value or "") converts 0 and False to "". The widget then loses its initial value and returns the wrong runner value. Use an explicit None check.

Keep slider values within the declared bounds.

_as_number preserves an out-of-range input_block.value, and Streamlit 1.40.0–1.56.0 expands the slider bounds to include it. Clamp or reject the default before calling slider. Add a test with min=10, max=100, and value=200.

Preserve cloud input metadata.

When a notebook.inputs entry includes options, multiple, min, max, or step, DeepnoteCloudRunner.info() strips them before InputBlock.from_api(). render_inputs() then uses empty select options or default slider bounds.
