The sections in this Wiki have a specific order from top to bottom. Each section serves as a foundation of knowledge for the next section. This way, you can easily learn about how we write, and easily go to any section as a resource when needed.

Please update "Version Date: MM-DD-YYYY by -Name-" if there's a new update. All changes can be seen through "Page history" if needed.

Brand Voice Chart (includes Example Text)

How to Use the Voice Chart:

1. Decide which product principle you want to emphasize with a piece of text.
2. Use the aspects of voice for that product principle when writing or editing the text.
3. If you are unsure of which product principle fits best for a piece of text, use more than 1 product principle to write multiple versions of the text. Discuss and decide which works best.

Product Principles	SIMPLE	TRUSTWORTHY	EMPOWERING	FRIENDLY
Concepts	Useful. Clear. Efficient. Easy.	Data transparency. Data access. Community-driven.	Data can help every community member learn, grow, hold government accountable, and make change.	Accessible & inclusive. Welcoming. Inviting.
Vocabulary	Plain, non-expert descriptions that emphasize action, results, and ease of use.	Professional, objective, serious. A community hub (catalog of open-access data), not a data broker (filter). Glossary of Terms

A working document to catalog terms to use and avoid in AtD UX Writing. This will help create consistency in UX Writing for AtD.

Language to Use

Language to Avoid

Nomenclature Audit

Finding #1 - Accuracy
The nomenclature audit revealed several inaccuracies where the copy had not been updated since the project pivot. These included mentions of:	- live workshops - recordings of workshops - data literacy education - modules
Suggestion:	Copy across public-facing documentation, perhaps, should be edited to remove mention of data literacy and education until we are pivoting back to include data literacy components

Finding #2 - Consistency
Descriptive terms consistently used to describe Access the Data on the Hack for LA one sheet and GitHub main page were missing from the wireframe "about us" text. They were: "government data" and "Los Angeles."
Suggestion:	Update "about us" text to use these terms to ensure the Access the Data website reflects language used elsewhere

	About Us Want to better your Los Angeles community in today’s data-driven world? You need access to local government data – the kind of data used to craft policies and set budgets. Access the Data is an open-access data catalog that community activists can rely on to find government data sources. We believe that access and transparency to public data are vital to participating in our democracy.

Brand Principle: Empowering.	Why We Built Access the Data LA County government organizations rely on data and data analysis to craft policies. Much of this data is made public. That means community members could access it, analyze it, and use it to advocate for their communities. The problem is that LA County government data can be hard to find. We’re on a mission to change that. We’re building Access the Data – a one-stop search tool where community members can find available LA county government data. Our goal is to empower more community members to engage in data-driven community advocacy.
Brand Principle: Simple, Trustworthy.	How it Works Step 1 – The LA County government makes government data public by publishing it on one of many government websites Step 2 – We make that data easy to find through our one-stop search tool Step 3 – Community members search Access This edit requires new graphics made, replacing the existing graphics. Markdown Tips for this Wiki

Tables:

• Add a space before and after each | for cleanliness and legibility. It becomes hard to read the code when every letter and character is clumped together.
• Press enter twice after the last row before adding text or images to give a line break (which means a row of space) below the table. Otherwise it will be included as part of the table.
• To copy the code for the table below, go to "Edit" on this Wiki, scroll down, and copy the code.

Line Breaks:

• These add a "for sure" row of space. Pressing enter however many times may not add the space you want.
• They are helpful in maintaining cleanliness, organization, and legibility.
• Leave space before and after each <br> for organization and legibility.
• Add one line break <br> after each paragraph and after any section where you only need that much space to differentiate between sections.
• Add two line breaks <br><br> after each complete section to give some breathing room before the next new section so that they're easier to differentiate and read.

Paragraphs:

• Press enter twice at the end of each paragraph to add space and start a new line of text. If you only press enter once, it continues as part of the previous paragraph with no space in-between.

Images:

• Only upload images in SVG format. Any other format will not be high enough quality, and will also not be big enough.
