What I do

Drawn from how I actually work on matthummel.com.

  • Full-stack web development — HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Next.js, PHP, and Node. I care about clean code, solid performance, and interfaces that work for everyone, on every device.
  • WordPress (the work I enjoy most) — custom themes and plugins, Sage 11 (Roots) with Blade, Acorn, Bedrock, Tailwind + Vite, and Gutenberg blocks & patterns. Also headless WordPress (REST API). Accessibility (WCAG), Core Web Vitals, and local SEO are part of the build, not a bolt-on.
  • Front-end — accessible, fast interfaces. Responsive layouts, readable type, and one clear next step — especially on phones.
  • Back-end — PHP, Node, and APIs: the logic, data, and integrations behind the site.
  • Local business sites — Gettysburg / Adams County restaurants, inns, shops, tours, and realtors. First draft in about a week; you own the domain, hosting, and site.
  • Power Platform (experience, not the focus) — Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataverse, and SharePoint / Microsoft 365 from my full-time consulting work. Useful when a team needs automation; WordPress is still where I’d rather spend the day.

I ship AI-first with Claude and Cursor as collaborators for architecture, implementation, and review. Every change still gets held to the same accessibility and performance bar as a hand-built project — I wrote about that workflow in AI Website Redesign: 5 Lessons From a Solo Developer.
