How SPOSH Began

SPOSH grew from our involvement with open tools for science and from the inspiration of the Gathering for Open Science Hardware (GOSH) community.

GOSH brought together a global community around the idea that scientific hardware should be open — enabling people to study, build, modify, reproduce and share the tools used to do science.

That global movement inspired a simple question:

Could we help build a similar community locally — bringing together people interested in Open Science Hardware, FOSS, scientific instrumentation and hands-on experimentation?

That question became one of the ideas behind SPOSH — Society for Promotion of Open Science Hardware.

Our practical journey with Open Science Hardware was also shaped strongly by ExpEYES — Experiments for Young Engineers and Scientists.

Working with ExpEYES showed us firsthand that scientific instruments can be open, affordable and understandable — allowing students, educators and experimenters not only to take measurements, but also to understand and modify the instruments themselves.

That journey continues with SEELab, extending open experimentation, measurement and data acquisition, and KuttyPy, bringing together programming, electronics and physical computing.

ExpEYES, SEELab and KuttyPy, developed by CSpark Research, have been an important part of our experience with open tools for science, together with the wider open-source community that has contributed to and grown around them.

SPOSH brings these experiences together: inspiration from a global Open Science Hardware community, hands-on experience with open scientific tools, and a desire to create a local community where people can meet, learn, build and collaborate.

About SPOSH

SPOSH — Society for Promotion of Open Science Hardware is a community that is still taking shape.

It grew from a simple belief: scientific tools should be open, accessible, understandable and reproducible, and people should be able to study, modify and improve the tools they use for science.

Our interests bring together Open Science Hardware, FOSS, scientific instrumentation, electronics, research tools and hands-on experimentation.

Right now, our main focus is simple:

Find like-minded people. Connect. Build together. Grow the community.

Researchers, educators, students, engineers, developers, makers and curious minds are all welcome.

We want to understand how they work, document what we learn, test them carefully and make it easier for others to build, reproduce, modify and improve them.

Open Science Hardware is not only about making scientific tools less expensive. It is also about making science more transparent, adaptable, collaborative and reproducible.
