ETIS Educational Ecosystem

The ETIS Educational Ecosystem adapts the broader ETIS lifecycle for teaching.

A semester course cannot deeply implement every topic in the full Framework. ETIS therefore supports different instructional models and course durations while preserving the underlying engineering principles, evidence model, and lifecycle orientation.

Two-Cycle Educational Model

The COMP 330/474 flagship implementation uses a two-cycle delivery model.

The first five phase gates move student engineering teams from project launch through an initial release.

The sixth phase gate begins an operational enhancement cycle, reinforcing the principle that:

Release is a transition in engineering responsibility, not the end of it.

This progression reflects the broader movement across ETIS from system construction and delivery toward the operational, governance, oversight, resilience, and stewardship concerns emphasized in Volume II.

The six-gate implementation is an educational adaptation of the broader ETIS lifecycle, not a claim that a single semester can cover every ETIS topic.

ETIS Engineering Education Suite

The ETIS Engineering Education Suite is a coordinated set of phase-gate-aware capabilities designed around semester software engineering courses.

The suite is designed to work as an integrated system, but adopting institutions may use one or more components according to their instructional model.

All three capabilities are phase-gate aware. Their expectations, analysis, and review emphasis change according to the current phase gate and the engineering history established at prior gates.

The suite supports engineering analysis, developmental review, and instructor evaluation; it does not replace the instructor's academic judgment or authority. Evidence, findings, confidence assessments, summaries, and rubric-aligned analysis are inputs to instructor decision-making, not autonomous grading decisions.

ETIS Preflight

ETIS Preflight performs phase-specific readiness analysis before formal review.

It uses deterministic checks, analytical heuristics, structural analysis, evidence expectations, and related techniques to determine whether expected repository evidence is present and has the basic shape required for the current phase gate.

Preflight helps answer:

Is the repository ready to be reviewed?

It does not perform the formal engineering review and does not make the phase-gate decision.

ETIS Engineering Studio

ETIS Engineering Studio is an instructor-operated learning environment for student engineering teams.

Students can create frozen evidence snapshots throughout a phase as their repository evolves. Team members share the same evidence snapshot while interacting independently with controlled engineering reviewers.

The Studio review board examines repository evidence holistically and can:

  • identify facts and evidence;
  • surface gaps, risks, and unresolved questions;
  • challenge assumptions;
  • ask probing questions;
  • conduct developmental mini-reviews;
  • help students examine tradeoffs;
  • revisit earlier engineering concerns;
  • direct students to relevant ETIS Engineering Platform stages, Starter Kit guidance, templates, and LMU/COICP examples.

The reviewers operate as bounded mentors and challengers.

They do not provide the engineering answer.

The educational objective is to strengthen the student's ability to reason from evidence, explain decisions, recognize uncertainty, challenge reviewer conclusions when appropriate, and take responsibility for engineering outcomes.

The student remains the engineer.

Engineering Studio is not a public self-service application. It is deployed and configured by an instructor or adopting institution for authorized courses, teams, students, and repositories.

ETIS Engineering Review Center

The ETIS Engineering Review Center is the instructor-facing formal phase-gate review environment.

At a formal gate, the submitted Git tag establishes the evidence boundary. Controlled engineering reviewers analyze that evidence according to the current phase gate and produce outputs such as:

  • rubric-aligned evidence;
  • engineering findings;
  • confidence assessments;
  • summaries;
  • evidence lineage;
  • traceability to repository artifacts;
  • longitudinal context from prior formal gate analysis.

The Review Center supports instructor judgment; it does not replace it.

The instructor retains academic authority and responsibility for the formal evaluation.

Developmental and Formal Review Remain Separate

Engineering Studio is developmental.

The Engineering Review Center is formal.

Studio review history and student-reviewer dialogue may be visible to the instructor, but those developmental conversations do not silently become evidence in the formal phase-gate review.

The evidence submitted at the designated phase-gate tag must stand on its own.

The Engineering Platform and Engineering Education Suite serve different but connected roles.

The Engineering Platform provides the stages, templates, examples, governance assets, and reference patterns students use while performing engineering work.

The Engineering Education Suite uses the phase-gate model and repository evidence to support readiness, developmental review, and formal review.

Engineering Studio can direct students to relevant Platform guidance, Starter Kit materials, and LMU/COICP examples when the evidence indicates that additional engineering guidance would be useful.

The Platform provides guidance.

The student team performs the engineering work.

The repository preserves the evidence.

The Suite helps students and instructors examine that evidence at the appropriate point in the lifecycle.

The docs/ directory is the source of truth for the public ETIS Framework website.


Build and Local Preview

Install the required dependencies in your normal ETIS development environment, then run:

mkdocs build --strict --clean

To preview locally:

mkdocs serve

The strict build should complete with no errors and no unresolved internal-link warnings.

The generated site/ directory should not be committed unless the repository's deployment model explicitly requires it.


Contribution and Branch Workflow

The main branch is protected.

Use a feature branch and pull request for changes:

git switch main
git fetch origin
git merge --ff-only origin/main
git switch -c <feature-branch>

After making and validating changes:

mkdocs build --strict --clean
git add <files>
git commit -m "<clear commit message>"
git push -u origin <feature-branch>

Then open a pull request into main.

Do not use git pull when the local working tree contains authoritative uncommitted changes.


Release Model

Official ETIS Framework releases are published through GitHub Releases.

Current release history:

  • v1.0.0 — initial public ETIS Framework release
  • v1.1.0 — earlier framework and publication evolution
  • v1.2.0 — Publications Program and Platform integration
  • v1.3.0 — Educational Ecosystem and Platform integration

The main branch may advance beyond the latest formal release through documentation, editorial, maintenance, and ecosystem-alignment changes.
